20.12.2006 - Russia is getting ready to turn into new standards in the sphere of seafarers’ identity cards.

The company “Sonda Technology” has successfully passed the certification of conformity of the biometrical system “Sonda” to work with seafarers identity cards according to the requirements of the international standards.

To increase the security of the personnel, occupied in the international sea shipping and taking into account international terrorism, the International Organization of Labor (IOL) approved and accepted the new Convention of seafarers’ identity cards 2003, known as Convention 185. Due to this Convention, the new document – seafarers’ identity card is based on the principle of the identification of the owner’s personality using fingerprints, and entering of the rest data with the help of the stripe-code, thus the seafarer’s identification time and getting of the necessary data about him comes to minimum (so called biometrical system of the document building). The possibility to make forgery documents has sharply decreased. The corresponding agency U.N.O. not only has approved the new document but also considers that coming into force of the new passport will allow increasing the seafaring and ports security.

Convention 185 has come into force since February 9, 2005 and will be gradually ratified by 178 countries, the members of the International Organization of Labor. As a special condition it is said in Convention that only biometrical identification corresponds to strict requirements of the security supply of ships and ports, at the same time simplifying seafarers movement in sailing.

At present time, the International Organization of Labor has admitted the systems of nine developers. The only Russian company Sonda Technologies has been included in this number.
